Lanarkshire Cecilian Orchestra
Last updated on : Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Peter McCabe, our Leader, previously led the Lanarkshire Cecilian Orchestra from 1980 to 1989 and rejoined as Leader in March 2004.

Peter began his study of music at the age of four. Although he passed Higher Grade Music (Glasgow High School) he opted for a career in Science. He has, however, extensive practical experience in music.  He joined the Lanarkshire Youth Orchestra in 1953 and has been violin tutor there since 1977.

Peter played in the First Orchestra of Glasgow High School, in the Glasgow Schools Orchestra and participated in the Glasgow Music Festival. He was a long-standing member of Glasgow University Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra and has recently been leader of the second violins of the Glasgow Orchestral Society. He has frequently played in choral performances, dance bands, operas, stage musicals, and string chamber groups as well as performing as a soloist.

Since 1976 he has instructed many private pupils some of whom currently play with the Lanarkshire Cecilian Orchestra. Peter has introduced some players to the Orchestra this session and is most enthusiastic about progress this year. He seldom is seen without a huge smile for everyone and is a great encouragement to all.

Personnel

It is with great shock and sadness that the Orchestra has to announce the sudden and tragic death of Mrs Marie Gardner in a fire at her home - 11 Crawford Street, Motherwell - on Thursday 8th January.

Marie,  was the longest serving (and a founding) member of the Orchestra, having joined the string section as a young woman. Marie and her sister, who played the piano, were the only two female members of the Orchestra at that time.

Marie rarely missed a Thursday rehearsal and enjoyed the company of others she played with each week. She got a thrill from performing in front of an audience  and liked to see new members, particularly young ones, joining the group.

Our hearts go out to Marie’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with them all at this sad time.
